Analysis of the description of sex in Chin P’ing Mei

Abstract: Description of sex in the novel has been a discussion topic for a long time,which particularly female sex mentality and behavior are the focus of the topic.But description of sex is profoundly explore complex emontion of human beings.So applying the notion of sex to the classic novel is a signifent breakthrough.

The auther describe many common women and men in later Ming Dynasty from a unique and special aspect.We all know that the novel is not like many traditional Chinses novels such as Three Kingdoms and The Water Margin.Major characters of Three Kingdoms are historical people and major characters of The Water Margin are heros.There is no surpise that a large number of critics and readers are more likely to accept traditional novel in China. Due to aesthetic regulation,some readers and critics do not regard it as a high level novel.So academic value of it has been negelected apparently for a long time.

It is widely acknowledged that content of the novel is about sensual passion.Many women in the novel are not restricted by traditional moral rules,which completely shows these women betray traditional ethics by pursueing sex and also reveals the process of awakening of human nature.

Three major women are Pan Jinlian,Li Pinger and Pang Chunmei,who have common pursuit—sexual passion.In this novel,It is no doubt that sex is their commmon goal and joys.It means that sex is their strongest desire,therefore,they are willing to take all their time and enery to enjoy sex.In fact,an satisfying sex is their direct motivity.

In a word,without sex in their life means they feel very distressed and depressed.Just like these women,the standard of appreciation women for Xi Mengqing is also different from other men.The best way for him to evaluate women is fully from aspect of sex.Young girls do not raise his enthusiasm.Moveover,he “love” married women because these married women usually obtained rich experience of sex from their husbands.As a result,these women would like to sacrifice their everthing for Xi Mengqing.

The phenomenon of large amount of sex description is very obvious in the novel.So it has become the most important factor for some scholars and critics to criticize it.Besides,many scholars and readers underestimate historal status and literary value according to traditional aesthetic standard.

It is popular belief that the novel is shortage of great ideal.In addition,we can simply see a despairing world and we can only see all the weakness about human nature from this novel.It has little optimistic content.From a traditional aespect,classical novel should give hope and strength for readers to look for a bright future.So traditional approachs affected a great number of people.

Why so many readers and critics do not would like acknowledge the great value of the novel?As far as I am concerd,the main reason is that common people still do not regard sex as a natural and rational phenomenon,that is to say,we still have much prejudice about it.

However,we should realize that sex is not need any reason,in fact,it really exicts all over the world.“Pursueing sex is human nature.What’s more,the desire of sex is very strong.” The famous sentence affirmed natural sexual passion in human beings’life.It is more acceptable than ever that natural sexual passion plays an vital role in the process of human beings’evolution .Similarly ,“Sigmund Freud divide human instinct into two categories,one of which is sexual instinct.”

We should begin to understand sex has became a more cultural phenomenon in our modern society than ever before,which is not simly an animal instinct.From what has been discussed above,we can see clearly that the novel’s content is very profound,because it deeply expose complicated human nature.

Some reaearchers usually evaluate sex from original morality and ehics.In fact,it is vain for the nature of novel.A successful novel should supposed to study complex and subtle feeling of human beings.But,as we all known, illustrating complex and subtle emotional experience is the most difficult for every auther. The novel obtain great achievements,as the auther of it has accomplished the aim.The success of it is auther found a particular perspective to illuminate morality,emotion and human nature.

Luckily,more and more people are fully aware of great accomplishment of it. As far as I am concerned,applying the notion of sex to the classic novel is the auther’success.In particular,it brought an innovation of notion in the field of novel.There is no doubt the auther made great contribution to the development of classic novel.
